All that talk about pitchers pitching on three days rest and the Angels changing the momentum of the series is over. CC Sabathia pitched on three days rest for the Yankees in Game 4 of the ALCS last night and was spectacular. Sabathia dominated the Angels through 8 innings of 5 hit ball, giving up just one run. The Angels hitters looked over matched for much of the game. The big Yankees ace seemed to get better as the game went along. Three of his five strikeouts came after the 6th inning.
Offensively, the Yankees bats came alive. They pounded out 13 hits and all but two starters recorded at least one hit. Centerfielder Melky Cabrera was having a tough postseason until last night. Cabrera had 3 hits in his 4 at bats, scoring a run and driving in four. One of his three hits was a double. Johnny Damon hit a home run in the 8th inning for the Yankees. While only 1 for 5 on the night, Damon seems to be swining the bat much better of late. Derek Jeter continued his hot hitting this postseason, getting two more hits. Despite all of these players chipping in, one man stole the show in Game 4. Alex Rodriguez has been a monster at the plate this postseason and Game 4 was no different. A-Rod was 3 for 4 including a double and a home run. He walked once and drove in two runs while scoring three times. Rodriguez was running the bases with aggresiveness, scoring from third on a ground ball to second base to score the Yankees first run of the game. He also stole a base. The Yankees start third baseman seems to be completely locked in and simply having fun. I bet a lot of you never thought you would be able to say that second part about A-Rod.
Angels starter Scott Kazmir lasted just 4 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs while walking 4 and striking out 3. For a team that has a very well balanced lineup, the Angels offense has been stagnant. Yankees pitchers have kept the Angels quiet for the most part. Chone Figgins and Bobby Abreu are the top two hitters in the lineup and set the table for the RBI guys. Figgins and Abreu are both hitting just .125 this series.
After today's day off, the series will continue Thursday night as the Yankees will attempt to finish off the Angels and win the American League pennant. A.J. Burnett will start for the Yankees against Angels ace John Lackey.
